Ooh er missus. Got a question bout my helmet. OK I've got that Arai Condor helmet I crashed in. I've worn it maybe just over a dozen times. It has hit the road when I came off, but it was during my bouncing down the road bit. It has 2 small chips to the surface about 3-4mm across. I have checked the lining inside, the protective bit and that looks in great condition. Now at the hospital they said to bin it, I argued that it had hardly hit the road and the speed was probably about 20mph or less, as it was the 4th or 5th bounce when it hit. Wife wants me to get rid. But I want to keep it, not just coz I'm a tight wad, but its the best helmet I've ever owned. Views please, or is it an ebay job?

What's the outer shell made of?
If it's fibreglass then bin it as it delaminates. Other materials I'm not sure about.
Problem is that if you've got a weakened area then another hit may cause it to fail (i.e. the effectiveness is reduced), so you can't be sure. Not what you want when you die of head injuries due to a lid failure but would have otherwise have survived. Not that you'll know this until next time you crash (another 21 years maybe?) and maybe it wouldn't make any difference anyway.
Personally, I have kept the lid I crashed in as an occasional run up the petrol station type thing as it only had some scuffs and the outer shell is a plastic but my first reaction was to bin it.
But my view is worth nothing as I don't test these things for a living.

I'd get rid mate, in the event of another unfortunate event, I have heard of insurers testing helmets for previous damage should the claim be a large one. They have the ability to analyze the structural integrity and can determine how old the stress fractures are. They then say that you lid was not legal and invalidate your insurance, giving you the big Fook off.
